Spring often gives you a pep in your step and the motivation to start cleaning your home. This season, we are inspired by everything fresh. From crisp new color schemes to interior cleaning tips, we have some tips for getting your home ready for Spring.

1. Cleaning Your Permanent Botanicals

The first step in cleaning your accessories is to work on ridding them of dust and debris. For example, we get many inquiries on how to keep delicate silk plants in good condition. This Pro Tip method is perfect for your silk plants and other accessories in your home:

Pro Tip: “Don’t use any sprays or cleaning chemicals. Not even soap on silk plants, which will attract more dust. Clean them weekly with a Swiffer duster just as you do everything else.” – Kelly Kaiser-Putnam, Lead Interior Designer and Owner of Orange Moon Interiors.

This also works for frames, coasters, lamps, vases, and other decorative items. We recommend a microfiber towel that traps dust without spreading it.

2. Focusing On Your Light Fixtures

Keep your light fixtures sparkly and bright as they should be! This may be tricky given how intricate your light fixture may be, for example, a chandelier.

Be sure to turn off the power to your fixture before cleaning. Use our Pro Tip on cleaning decor items. If you happen to have a glass or crystal chandelier, be sure to use a special chandelier cleaning solution and avoid harsh chemicals. Wipe each piece carefully with a damp microfiber cloth. For hard-to-reach areas use a tiny brush such as a toothbrush to gently remove dirt or grime.

The key to a complete clean is remembering all the parts of a chandelier, including arms, chains, bulbs, and ceiling plate. We suggest touching up your light fixtures every 6 months.

Pro Tip: “Use just a touch of vinegar and water on your crystal chandeliers!” – Kelly Kaiser-Putnam

3. Maintaining Your Performance Fabrics

At Orange Moon Interiors, providing gorgeous, custom, and durable fabrics is an important facet of design.

Pro Tip: “We use performance fabrics such as Crypton (see image below) and Life Guard that are already treated so you only have to blot away any spills.  Dirt can be cleaned with just a little bit of soap and water. Live life without worrying about your fabrics. “ – Kelly Kaiser-Putnam

If you do have to apply soap and water, let your performance fabrics air dry whenever possible. High heat is known to damage the fiber’s effectiveness over time. Avoid constant, direct sunlight, and rotate cushions and covers.

For coastal clients, having water-repellent fabric is key. A favorite fabric, Lifeguard (shown above), is water-repellent. Furniture needs to withstand things like wet bathing suits, towels, sand, and pool clothes.

4. Work In Fresh Color Pallets

This Spring, we have been pulling together fresh color palettes. Our favorite interior design colors for this season are blue and green. The combination brings us closer to nature and gives us a sense of tranquility. We have created inspired flat lays and have also spotted this color combination in our favorite publications.

5. Activate Your Sense Of Smell

You can do all of these tips to have your house looking fresh and clean, but that can be immediately overlooked if you have a rancid or unpleasant smell in your home. Pop open a window or two to increase airflow quickly. Stagnant air can lead to distinct smells.

6. New Designs For Kids And Their Messes

Interior design for children’s rooms has come a long way.  Mr. Rogers said, “play is the work of childhood”.  As kids grow, their needs quickly evolve, requiring pieces that serve all purposes. At Orange Moon Interiors we believe function, durability, and longevity can be done with style to make beautiful memories.

Pro Tip: “Mix patterns for a more forgiving durability with regards to stains and wear.” – Kelly at Orange Moon Interiors

Leave room for kids to explore somewhere.  Does ‘bouncing off the walls’ sound familiar?  Create different spaces for them to sleep and play. Keep it interesting with fabrics and art. Flexible themes allow the room to grow with the child. Select durable, quality paint finishes that leave walls easy to clean. Store toys and crafts in a mix of well-organized bins, pretty boxes, and shelving.
