Dark, noir interiors. Not your first thought when it comes to coastal living? We are here to tell you it can be done – exquisitely. Our latest project is inspired by traditional interiors, botanical prints, tropical vibes, family heirlooms, and rich tones. Follow along and open your mind to a tropical vibe.

Introducing “Tropical Noir”

Think beautiful tropical images on a black background. “Kravet has some great fabrics that I’m working with that exude this sort of sexy, tropical look. This home is going to be different and it’s going to be uniquely her home, not a showroom. Darker interiors mixed with happy colors are a big trend.” says Kaiser.

Utilizing Dark Colors and Traditional Family Heirlooms In Interior Design

With a lot of our clients being transplants or owning a second home in Florida, we often receive the question “What do I do with all of these inherited things I have now that we live in Florida?”.  We love to work with antique pieces. This black piano is a treasured family heirloom that was a must have in the home owners design concept. The fabric on the right next to the barstools is the fabric on an existing set of chairs that the home owner loves.

“I chose that fabric as my inspiration. The homeowner loves it! Now we are doing the young girls bedrooms in these fun noir animal designs and happy colors mixed with black. It’s going to be great.” says Kaiser. As you see below – happy and ornate pieces can be paired together when you use the correct color scheme and great interior design.

Notice all of the deep navy and deep aqua colors mixed with rattan and dare we say.. black?  “I hear people ask, how in the world do I do this? I say – get a design consultation at the least.” says Kelly Kaiser. If you have beautiful inherited pieces that are valuable and special to you – we have seen that using tropical noir is a great way to incorporate them.

You can’t escape the beautiful color of green inspired by the gorgeous palms we have in Florida. We love this shade “Palm” by Farrow and Ball and “Dried Thyme” by Canterbury Creative sold on Etsy.

Dark Exteriors On Coastal Style Homes

We were recently interviewed by Sarasota Magazine about this subject. Kaiser points out in the article “Some people don’t want their house to look like an ice cream cone. I’m seeing the uptick in dark exteriors. It’s sexy, it’s timeless, it’s tailored, and I’m really enjoying using it.” The magazine chose to feature one of Orange Moon Interiors completed home designs on Bird Key. This was completed in 2019 and is indeed, still timeless.

“It’s Florida, so we have to choose where we put black very carefully,” Kaiser says, “I’m finding a lot of clients are more open to dark front doors and black window frames, shutters and garage doors, so you still get that classic vibe.”  Read the full article here.
